For years I have already been asking myself the question, “Why is smoking bad for your health?”. The reason I ask myself this question is simple and goes such as a statement by Mark Twain “Why I don’t wish to be a poison addict, I’d be out on a limb!” What Twain says is that if you smoke a cigarette and then decide that you don’t desire to smoke anymore, you’d be a whole lot out of luck. There are many reasons why smoking is bad for your health. I will outline two of them here.
The initial reason that I want to get down to how come smoking bad for your health is because of the high levels of carcinogens in cigarettes. When you smoke a cigarette you’re unknowingly inhaling thousands upon a large number of carcinogens which have been placed in to the air through the tobacco, the oil used in the packing and the way it is processed. These carcinogens penetrate deep into your lungs and create a large number of several types of cancer over their lifetime. This includes lung cancer, mouth cancer, throat cancer, esophageal cancer and cervical cancer to mention several.
Now, there are many different types of cancer that you can suffer from due to your smoking habits, however the thing to keep in mind here is that you only have one body. Everything that you ingest or create inside you is passed during your system via your lungs. You therefore need to keep this in mind when thinking about the potential risks of smoking. If you simply continue smoking and doing this will increase your threat of many types of cancers including: lung cancer, esophageal cancer, laryngeal cancer, cervical cancer, bladder cancer and even pancreatic cancer. Not forgetting the other diseases that are created as time passes from smoking.
Secondly, smoking creates a weak disease fighting capability, which increases your threat of colds and the flu. When you are already vulnerable to colds and the flu, then smoking definitely decreases the rate of which your body can fight off these common illnesses. Also, smokers have a problem with digestion, thus causing them to suffer from several digestive problems such as irritable bowel syndrome, ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. The nicotine in cigarettes causes your blood vessels to constrict, increasing your heartrate and blood pressure. The consequence of this increased stress in your heart and circulatory system is premature aging and poor health.
Thirdly, smokers undergo more changes within their bodies due to smoking. The nicotine increases your food cravings and cause you to be less tolerant of winter.
